    The Limited Effect of Graphic Elements in Video and Augmented Reality on Children’s Listening Comprehension

    There is currently significant interest in the use of instructional strategies in learning environments thanks to the emergence of new multimedia systems that combine text, audio, graphics and video, such as augmented reality (AR). In this light, this study compares the effectiveness of AR and video for listening comprehension tasks. The sample consisted of thirty-two elementary school students with different reading comprehension. Firstly, the experience, instructions and objectives were introduced to all the students. Next, they were divided into two groups to perform activities—one group performed an activity involving watching an Educational Video Story of the Laika dog and her Space Journey available by mobile devices app Blue Planet Tales, while the other performed an activity involving the use of AR, whose contents of the same history were visualized by means of the app Augment Sales. Once the activities were completed participants answered a comprehension test. Results (p = 0.180) indicate there are no meaningful differences between the lesson format and test performance. But there are differences between the participants of the AR group according to their reading comprehension level. With respect to the time taken to perform the comprehension test, there is no significant difference between the two groups but there is a difference between participants with a high and low level of comprehension. To conclude SUS (System Usability Scale) questionnaire was used to establish the measure usability for the AR app on a smartphone. An average score of 77.5 out of 100 was obtained in this questionnaire, which indicates that the app has fairly good user-centered design

    La enseñanza universitaria actual requiere de estudiantes motivados para alcanzar un aprendizaje de tipo comprensivo, y que asuman en mejores condiciones, su nuevo rol activo en la adquisición de las competencias necesarias para afrontar con éxito sus desafíos profesionales, y donde el aprendizaje autónomo ha adquirido un notable valor.  En la formación de los profesionales que ejercen la Arquitectura Técnica, la adquisición de competencias en el área de la Expresión Gráfica resulta fundamental. Se propone como contribución a esta tarea, una experiencia que trata la utilización de Objetos de Aprendizaje basados en TIC, diseñados específicamente para este área y su aplicación como recurso de apoyo a la docencia en una asignatura del grado universitario que forma estos profesionales. Los resultados muestran que tras la intervención mejora significativamente la motivación intrínseca de los estudiantes, lo que resulta fundamental de cara a conseguir un aprendizaje más significativo, que garantice la necesaria comprensión, retención y transferencia de lo aprendido, y que por tanto, facilita la adquisición de las competencias en el área de la Expresión Gráfica

    Draft genome sequence of Weissella viridescens UCO-SMC3, isolated from the slime of helix aspersa Müller snails

    This report describes the draft genome sequence of Weissella viridescens UCO-SMC3, isolated from Helix aspersa Müller slime. The reads were generated by a whole-genome sequencing (WGS) strategy on an Illumina MiSeq sequencer and were assembled into contigs with a total estimated size of 1,612,814 bp. A total of 2,455 genes were predicted, including 2,301 protein-coding sequences. The draft genome sequence of W. viridescens UCO-SMC3 will be useful for further studies of specific genetic features and for understanding the mechanisms of its beneficial properties in the skin.Fil: Garcia Cancino, Apolinaria.     Perceived Sensations in Architectural Spaces through Immersive Virtual Reality

    [EN] To design architectural spaces that not only respond to the basic needs of users, but also seek their emotional well-being, it is necessary for the architecture students to have a special sensitivity and be aware of the different sensations that their designs should and can evoke. To achieve this competence without exploring real spaces, Immersive Virtual Reality technology offers an important contribution to the field of architecture. The purpose of this research is to determine if the sensations perceived in virtual architectural spaces by students are similar to the real ones and to determine the characteristics of this technology that allow a better perception of sensations. Six architectural modules were designed to be walked through and experienced at real scale using a Head Mounted Display by 22 students of the first and fifth year of studies of Architecture career in Peru. An ad-hoc questionnaire allowed to know the perceived sensations and the benefits of the tool. The results obtained showed that the perception of sensations of the fifth year students is a little closer to those expressed by a group of seven experts compared to that of the first year students and that the students consider the characteristics of accessibility, real scale of the space and the possibility of going through and looking at the space in all directions are those that have given more realism to the experience and therefore better perception of the space, while the characteristics of natural light and shadows, construction materials and external environment have been less valued in the realism of the experience.     Estudio del comportamiento de especies nativas en los primeros estados de desarrollo en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

    Esta investigación se realizó en la reserva natural Casa Loma, el cual es una institución que tiene la iniciativa de contribuir en la recuperación florística de las áreas degradadas en partes de la sierra nevada de Santa Marta, en especial la región de Mendihuaca. Se emplearon siete especies nativas, tenidas en cuenta por su importancia cultural, industrial y ecológica. Estas son: Nolí Elaeis oleifera; Caney Aspidosperma cruentum; Joyo macho Trichilia hirta; Sambo cedro Guarea guidonia; Gusanero Astronium graveolens; Mamón de leche Pradosia colombiana y Pereguétano Parinari pachyphylla. Teniendo en cuenta tecnologías agronómicas y silviculturales, se produjeron plántulas con fines de repoblamiento. La técnica utilizada para el repoblamiento fue la de enriquecimiento. Se aportaron conocimientos básicos de cómo se da la germinación, el tipo de latencia de la semilla, que viabilidad poseen y que comportamiento de desarrollo tienen en los primeros estados

    Systematic evaluation of cryptic freshwater snails from central Chile, including the enigmatic Littoridina santiagensis (Gastropoda, Truncatelloidea)

    In 1944, Walter Biese described Littoridina santiagensis (Cochliopidae) from Estero Dehesa based exclusively on external shell features and a second allopatric population in Yeso Spring three years later. Different samplings carried out since 2011 in the type locality have only provided specimens of the morphologically similar invasive mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Tateidae) raising doubts about the identity of the species. The recent finding of two snail morphotypes in Yeso Spring, a thick shelled form congruent with type specimens of L. santiagensis and a slender one morphologically associable to P. antipodarum, allowed comparative studies, including the taxonomic analysis of additional populations with similar shell morphology occurring in central Chile. A DNA barcoding (COI) approach identified the slender form from Yeso Spring in Maipo Basin and a second population from the contiguous Rapel Basin indeed as the invasive P. antipodarum, however, L. santiagensis was recovered among species of Potamolithus (Tateidae) justifying the binomem Potamolithus santiagensis as a new combination. Besides recognition of other three populations as belonging to Potamolithus, the molecular analysis also suggests trans-Andean dispersal of this group of snails in the Southern Cone of South America.Fil: Collado, Gonzalo A..     Enhanced weathering and erosion of a cohesive shore platform following the experimental removal of mussels

    The organisms inhabiting intertidal platforms can affect their weathering and erosion rates. Research on biotic influences on platform integrity has traditionally emphasized the role of bioeroders (i.e., organisms that scrap or bore into platforms via mechanical and chemical means). Yet, recent studies illustrate that covers of sessile organisms on the surfaces of intertidal platforms can have bioprotective effects by reducing the efficacy of physical weathering and erosion agents. Eroding cliffs fronted by cohesive shore platforms are a pervasive feature along the continental Argentinean coastline (37–52°S). In this study, we investigated how mussel (Brachidontes rodriguezii) cover mediates weathering and erosion of a cohesive, consolidated silt platform at Playa Copacabana (5 km north of Miramar, Buenos Aires Province; 38° 14′ S, 57° 46′ W). By means of mussel removal experiments, we found that mussel cover attenuates variations in platform surface temperatures, enhances moisture retention during low tide, reduces rates of salt crystallization within the pores of the platform material, and attenuates hydrodynamic forcing on the platform surface. Mussel removal also led to a 10% decrease in surface hardness and a 2-mm reduction in platform height after 5 months. Collectively, our findings indicate that mussel beds limit substrate breakdown via heating-cooling, wetting-drying, and salt crystallization and provide some of the first experimental field evidence for the direct impacts of biotic cover on platform erosion. As intertidal platforms protect the cliffs behind from the hydraulic impact of waves, which may be enhanced with future sea-level rise, we posit that the protection of platforms by mussels indirectly moderates coastline retreat, especially on soft cohesive shores.Fil: Gonzalez, Juliana Andrea.     Intercultural and digital competence in teacher training from an international perspective: Poland Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and Russia

    This article presents one of the studies from the European project IRNET, a network that pursues the development of new tools and methods for advanced pedagogical science in the field of ICT instruments, elearning and intercultural competences. We intend to explore the application of international and national policies of innovative, digital Education and intercultural competences in teacher training, as well as innovative educational practices. Another objective of the project is also to identify such practises and/or research projects in order to foster intercultural and digital competences in Spain, Poland , Slovak, Portugal and Russia. From a comparative perspective and on a qualitative paradigm, we have analyzed three comparative units that have allowed, among other things, us to look at the impact of projects financed with European or national funds as promoters of change and innovation related to intercultural training and technologies information. Finally, it has been observed that teaching trends point to a professorship endowed with skills that integrate intercultural models from the joint search for the school of the future, and for that online networks and virtual learning communities are key resources
